Google Places is actually Google Business that they renamed recently.

We can add our business listings in Google Places to be shown in Google search  and on Google maps. This not only puts your business on google but also enhances your credibility.

Adding you business previously was extremely easy and was accepted too automatically but now Google has implemented some required guidelines and made the system intelligent enough to accept only real listings.

Today, when adding a new business venture Healthy Treat to Google Places, I faced an unusual issue. It was not accepting the word “Kalu“.

I was consistently getting the error “The term ‘kalu’ is not allowed“

I tried placing it Address line 1 and 2 but in vain. Just to give another check, I tried adding it in other fields but the same error.

Is there something wrong with the word “Kalu” or has it been made some keyword or has it been considered defamatory to anyone? I don’t know and googling it also did not help.

Anyone knows why Google is not accepting the term “Kalu“??

Somebody has interpreted the Rupee symbol very well. Have a look dear readers.

I have kept this post in the Thoughtworks category instead of Humour because there is a lot to think about the interpretation of the symbol.

Even after the currency has gone global, does it have any effects on the day-2-day life of poor and middle class and for that matter rich class too?

Is it going to bring lot more opportunities in the country? If yes, how long will it take?

Even economist may not have answer to that. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, India’s former president and missile man, once said that India would be a global power and a developed nation by 2020. Does it still hold true when only 10 years are left for this vision year?

Remember Fake IPL Player thing during the IPL (Indian Premier League) season 2 in South Africa?

If not, then guess you don’t follow cricket. Fake IPL Player started a blog in IPL2, pretended to be a KKR insider and telling the bitter truth about the inside stories, many were fake but it attracted eyes of many and criticism at the same time too.

Fake player was blogging at www.fakeiplplayer.com. He once tried to reveal himself but revelation was fake too.

But the thing has come to an end. The fake IPL player revealed himself  as Anupam Mukherji, a resident of Bangalore, on an Indian News channel says that the blog was just ‘a figment of imagination‘ and was an inspiration from a fake blog on Steve Jobs.

Anupam Mukherji is the face that fooled a millions with his predictions and insider stories. He was the mind that tricked the readers to believe everything he wrote about the Indian Premier League in its second season, which was held in South Africa. Considered as one of the biggest hoax in Indian cricket, Anupam confessed to ‘being the fake IPL player‘.

In his last blog post on August 2 he wrote:

Yes, you heard it right. India has no national language. Shocked?? I was shocked too when heard it for the first time.

Since the very beginning of our studies in schools, we have been regularly taught (as far as I remember) that Hindi is our national language. Hindi came from Sanskrit as many other Indian languages did is the most spoken language in India and at least I was unaware of the fact that neither Hindi nor any other language is our national language.

Although, Hindi is the official language of Republic of India and English the secondary official language.

So why we have been always told that:

• Lotus is our national flower.
• Tiger is our national animal.
• Peacock is our national bird.
• Vande Matram is our national song.
• Jan gan man is our national anthem.
• Hindi is our national language.

Last one is definitely not correct. After arguing it for 15 minutes and then Googling it, I came to know the fact that there is no national language defined for India in the constitution of India. Shocking!!!!

Wiki also says:

The principal official language of the Republic of India is Hindi while English is the secondary official language. The constitution of India states that “The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script.” Neither the Constitution of India nor Indian law specifies a National language, a position supported by a High Court ruling.

To again confirm it, not from the authorities, but from the little kids at my home, I asked them all questions in the bullet points above and to my surprise they did told me that Hindi is our national language. 5th-8th standard they study in. This confirmed that in our schools specially in Northern region where Hindi is spoken, it is considered and taught as our National Language.

We are not studying the facts.

I notice a facebook app in some of my friends feed in Facebook namely RSS Graffiti. I initially ignored it but later thought let’s give it a try at least once. I installed it and added it to my page from the app page.

The app did not impress me at all. I did not like the format in which it posted the article on my page and moreover I would never want an app control my profile or page.

This app publishes multiple RSS/ATOM feeds on the walls of our Facebook Profile, Facebook Fan Pages & Facebook Groups. But do we really need it? Are we so busy writing 100s of articles daily that we forget sharing quality contents, that is why we take help from these apps?

There are hell lot of apps in the market that reads feeds and posts them to multiple locations and RSS Graffiti is one of them.

Most of us from blogging community are subscribed to most of them. So what happens is, we post one article and the feed is read by 10 applications and posted on our profile in 10 different ways.

Does it help? I don’t think so. It may reduce the credibility of the blog and the blogger. One blogger that I really cherish in India is Amit Aggarwal from labnol who believes in spending time creating quality content and not promoting an average or below average content 50 times a day to just get visitors. In longer run he is absolutely on right path.

We just completed the movement of “Anugoonj – A social platform“, which is hosted on Pligg CMS, from JustHost to DreamHost web hosting provider and believe me it was damn easy. Even a layman can do it with so much ease.

We will quickly tell you the steps:

1. Download Filezilla ftp client (Direct Link), if no other ftp utility present. It is quick and easy to use.
2. Login to ftp of your current hosting provider and download all the files.
3. Create /Add the domain to your new hosting provider, if not already done.
4. Login to ftp of your new hosting provider and upload all the files to new domain folder.
5. Files have been uploaded, now is the turn of database.
6. Login to MySQL of your current hosing provider and export the complete database as sql script and one with only tables.
7. Login to MySQL of your new hosting provider and import the database sql and execute it.
8. If the database creation fails because of the lack of permission of database creation from MySQL interface, then login to the control panel of your new hosting provider and create a new database.
9. From MySQL execute the script which contains only tables and data.
10. Your database is also done now.
11. Now go to the file in new hosting ftp libs\dbconnect.php and update the new database information. Host may remain same (localhost) but db name, user id and password may change.
12. Now you need to change the nameservers of the domain in your domain controller.
13. I think you are done.

And you know, I later searched it and found an article on Pligg that explains everything in details but I did it myself without its reference. Its damn simple.

I came to know about them today morning only and felt good that they can now be reached on twitter. I consider Airtel to be a good service provider in India, so far at least.

They have always been approachable via their customer care number 121 but now they are trying to build their network using the social media like twitter. After all, as long as customers are happy, company is approachable and there is transparency in everything then only a company can grow.

It’s time to celebrate. It’s time to celebrate our freedom.

Yes, it’s time to celebrate our Independence Day. India got freedom from British rule on 15th August 1947.

63 years have gone by and we, as a nation, have also progressed well. In 63 years we have become more mature, more independent but continued to remain a peace loving nation.

I am proud to be an Indian and wish to see India celebrating 100 years of independence, a glorious moment for all of us. We have always been optimistic. We see positives in everything. We believe in moving with the world and not against it. We don’t wish to fight with anyone but share happiness. We don’t pretend to be a powerful nation but live life as it comes. We have grown industries on our own and invited global investors from all over the world.

Still, there are more than 50% of population under poverty line, we don’t hide it. We have the biggest slum of Asia in Mumbai, but we don’t run away from it. We have 1000 times more problems than in any other nation but we don’t blame others. We have the most number of religions in the world, but we live united.

Let’s spread the warmth of love so that the human life is extended by 1000 years.

Delhi Traffic Police’s Facebook page has already created a buzz not only in India but all over world now. The New York Times recently published a news on how Delhi Traffic Police is using its Facebook page to catch hold of law breakers and issuing Challans on the basis of photos uploaded by the fans of the page, the common men.

Apart from the photos, videos; Delhi Traffic Police continuously informs the residents about the traffic condition on various roads in the capital city. Residents are also posting alerts about traffic obstruction on Facebook to allow fellow citizens to avoid those roads. This has become more like a forum for the citizens of Delhi who are just near to hosting Commonwealth Games in October this year.

The report further added that the traffic police acknowledged that it was possible photos could be manipulated to incriminate someone who was not actually breaking the law. But, drivers can surely contest the challans if they think they were wrongly issued.

Only after couple of days, PayPal stopped electronic withdrawal in India, PayPal has now resumed the service.

According to their recent statement, they have said that it was really unfortunate to stop the service but now we can enjoy the electronic withdrawal in India without any hindrances.

They further added that they will continue to provide the $4 USD processing fee refund for cheque withdrawals until further notice.

WordPress 3.0.1 is available for download and upgrade.

But I am facing problem in automatic upgrade. When I try to automatic upgrade, it displays “Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance” info message and after 5 minutes it says that up-gradation fails. I tried it on my another blog and it fails too.

It does not show me the reason of failure.

• Can I anyhow know the reason of failure? I am on DreamHost server.
• Is it something to do with some plug-in or rights? I was able to upgrade before.
• Is it something with this version of WordPress?

Any help?

It really is a surprise to me and you may be surprised too when you would come to know that you can access your articles on wordpress hosted blog from a shortcut URL if you remember the article title.

How?

Let me explain this to you. It’s really simple and quick too.

When you type your blog url and followed by a character or a word then wordpress searches the first article with that char/word and if found, the page is redirected to that article.

Let’s suppose; I type an url www.nkjlive.com/a then wordpress will try to find an article starting with ‘a’ and if found will be displayed.

Other examples are www.nkjlive.com/wordpress or www.nkjlive.com/paypal but if the char/word is not found then a 404 error.

After noticing it, I initially thought it is some plug-in which is doing it but I tried on other couple of blogs (www.solidblogger.com/itunes, techpp.com/free) and many a times on my another blog (nitinkumarjain.in/brother) and it all worked good.

It seems to be some unnoticed feature with wordpress.

After having a tug of war with Indian authorities, PayPal has finally ended the electronic withdrawal of funds directly to bank accounts in India. Now users of PayPal can only request for a cheque withdrawal of funds from their PayPal account starting 1st August 2010.

But the good part is that PayPal will not levy any charges for cheque withdrawal. It normally charges $5 as cheque withdrawal fee.

In their recent release PayPal said:

In accordance with regulatory instructions, we would like to notify you about a change in our withdrawal functionality in India starting on August 1, 2010. At present you can request for either an electronic or cheque withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account if you are an India user.

From July 29, 2010 onwards, you will only be able to request for a cheque withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account.

While we are working hard to restore the electronic withdrawal service, in the meantime, we are bringing this matter to your attention so that you can plan your future withdrawal activities accordingly.

To request for a cheque withdrawal:

1. Log into your PayPal account, click on ‘Withdraw’.
2. Click on the ‘Request a cheque from PayPal’ link.
3. Enter the withdrawal amount and select your mailing address, then click ‘Continue’.
4. Click ‘Submit’ to confirm your request.

In order to help you with this change and until further notice, we will refund the $5 USD cheque withdrawal fee to you for cheque withdrawals made on July 29, 2010 onwards.

For any questions, please log into your PayPal account and click ‘Contact Us’ at the bottom of the page.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused from this change in our withdrawal functionality. We will provide ongoing updates to you here. We thank you for your attention and patience as we work tirelessly to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.

Hope the change is withdrawn soon as electronic transfer is much faster and environment friendly and saves paper work too.

I faced an unusual battery issue with my iPhone 3G yesterday. I recently installed iPhone 4.0 on it, unlocked and jailbroke it too.

iOS4.0 has a feature (iOS3.0 also had it) wherein we can see the % battery remaining.

Yesterday, when my iPhone started showing me 8% battery remaining, I plugged it to power to recharge it and as soon as I did that, this device started showing me 72%. I was surprised to see that. Just to check, I removed the recharger and now the battery % settled for 63.

I don’t know why it happened and if it is some bug with the OS.

I don’t find it a reliable way to know the % battery remaining.

Any other way to keep eye on it??
